India

Mumbai, September 2010

Besides China, India is one of the major emerging markets on this planet and it has a growing automotive industry. Together with a local representative of my employer I visited the car manufacturer Tata Motors and a supplier in fall 2010. I spent the weekend in Mumbai, a bustling megacity at the Indian west coast. 22 million people share a narrow peninsula yielding the highest population density in the world. More than half of the population endure a poor life in the biggest slums of the world, made popular by the Hollywood film "Slumdog Millionaire". On the other hand, a handful of people live in great luxury and belong to the global jetset such as the Bollywood movie stars. The big crowd makes Mumbai a fascinating city, however, the ever present poverty is shocking.

Pune, September 2010

Pune is about 170km / 105mi west of Mumbai and represents a regional cultural and intellectual hub. It was here where Bhagwan founded his famous sect. However, I didn't came for the meditation. I had a business meeting with some engineers at Tata Motors. Tata has a big manufacturing plant in Pune where, among others, the cheapest car in the world called "Nano" is made. It comes for only 1500 Euros or 2200 US Dollers.

Coimbatore, September 2010

Coimbatore lies in the south of India. It's also known as the "Manchester of the South" since it has a big textile industry. It also hosts some car part manufacturers.
