The island of Sri Lanka lies in the Indian Ocean between  6° and 10° northern latitude. It is separated from the Indian subcontinent by a barely 30 km (19 mi) wide shallow strait.

In the 19th and 20th centuries Sri Lanka became a plantation economy famous for its production and export of cinnamon, rubber and Ceylon tea. Tea dominates still today, besides products made of coconut.  In 2007, Sri Lanka was the second-biggest tea producer worldwide behind Kenia but before China.
